In the UK, one area where a move towards greater electronic communication has been resisted has been in the sending of greetings cards. While the greater convenience and speed of email has made its mark on our business lives, and even on our day-to-day non-work communications, there is little sign that the traditional birthday or Christmas card is being usurped by the various methods of virtual greetings.

That is probably because, while on a daily basis we are happy to take advantage of the many benefits which email, instant messaging and texting bring, they still cannot take the place of the noise made by the letterbox as it swings shut after a large amount of post has dropped through it. Very rarely does anyone anticipate receiving an email. Yet with a greetings card, or a parcel marking a special occasion, it is totally different. That knock on the door or ring of the doorbell which marks the arrival of a courier with a mysterious parcel brings an excitement which simply cannot be replicated in the virtual world.

No one instantly stops what they are doing to read every email. Yet there is something about watching a delivery vehicle pull up, and the driver getting out and knocking on the door which makes us instantly take notice, and rush to see what they have for us. Because of that, arranging for a parcel delivery carrying a special gift on the recipient's birthday makes that day even more treasured, and likely to be remembered long into the future.

Of course the surprise element plays a great part in the delight that is experienced with a parcel delivery. There is also the thought that the gift might have been transported a long distance around the world to its destination, and that the recipient is the only person for miles around whose special day has been remembered with a unique gift. Because they are bringing this level of happiness into people's lives, there must be many times when being a parcel delivery driver must feel like the best job in the world.

That person has the ability, at least temporarily, to distract someone from their daily thoughts, and make them feel that someone else, at least, thinks that they are the most special person in the world. And that is why birthdays are still special, and so are worth celebrating, even though two people who are usually very close are miles apart at the time.

International parcel delivery has a knack of making a birthday one to remember. Trusted companies such as DHL work hard to keep their customers happy because they know that in doing so, they will be remembered.
