Keeping An Eye On Your Stationery Supplies Is Astute Business Practice
Despite the recession there are thousands of companies and businesses which are either thriving or at least managing to keep their head above water
. One thing that everyone is very aware of is the cut backs which have to be made in order to survive.
The news is full of company closures and people being made redundant however, there are some very cost effect ways to save money without having to lay people off. Sadly many businesses, more especially the larger corporate companies are subject to petty pilfering. Whilst this may seem rather petty to some people, if a large company suffers pilfering on a grand scale they are losing precious money which they can ill afford at any time, let alone during a recession.
Many people believe that to take home the odd pen is 'par for course' when working within an office environment, however reams of high quality paper or ink cartridges disappearing on a regular basis can end up costing the company huge amounts of money.
So where is the line drawn between taking the odd pen or highlighter home and the larger more expensive stationery items?
Some may see the situation as thieving irrespective of whether it a pen or a ream of paper which mysteriously disappears. Most corporate companies will take into account some misdemeanour's and put these down to natural wastage or loss on their accounts. Where as other companies will have it written very clearly within contracts of employment that any pilfering is constituted ad theft and is subjected to instant dismissal along with court action.
The argument that some people don't get paid well and therefore sincerely believe that they are entitled to helping themselves from the stationery supplies cupboard is the given right. In the eyes of the law it is theft which is prosecutable.
Irrespective of the size of a company or business, loosing money to petty pilfering can mean the difference between turning a profit at the end of the year. Many companies have stringent stock control systems in place in an attempt to reduce the amount of pilfering within their workplace. Usually this means that one or two people are responsible for keeping the stationery supplies cupboard adequately stocked along with having inventory books which employees have to complete each time they enter the stock cupboard. Most large companies also keep their stationery supplies under lock and key as another proactive deterrent to thieving.
All sounding rather bizarre and extreme? Maybe, however, anyone who works or has worked for a large company will see this as the norm, irrespective of the annoyance and frustration this type of stock control can lead to.
At the end of the day stationery supplies are expensive commodities and no company can afford to sit back and ignore the situation, if they do they are subjecting themselves to unnecessary losses which can mean the difference between a thriving business to one which has to start laying people off because they cannot make a profit. Those who believe this is 'big brother' to the extreme may wish to consider their position the next time they decide to take a ream of paper or ink cartridges home without permission.
