Keeping Shower Hoses And Heads Free From Toxins
Studies of bathrooms in the United Kingdom have uncovered a disturbing fact: At least
one-third of shower heads and hoses harbour harmful organisms and other potentially toxic substances. Such hazardous organisms include bacteria like Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Mycobacterium avium as well as the metal particulates from rusty components.
Think of this scenario: Whenever you take a shower and place your face under the shower spray, you are unwittingly exposing yourself to health hazards. You can develop infections in your lungs, urinary tract and blood stream from the above mentioned bacteria. Yes, the risks may be minuscule but are present, nonetheless, and you will not want to expose yourself and your family members to such risks. Fortunately, many ways have been found to counteract these health risks coming from shower heads and hoses.
Immediate Clean-up:
It may seem like too much of a hassle to clean the shower area from its walls to its accessories after every use but it is well worth the time and effort. Slime, the black gunk around the shower hoses and heads, can then be prevented from building up with daily cleaning.
Just get a wet sponge and wipe the walls of the shower area. Then, using a dry microfibre towel, wipe dry the shower head, hose and other stainless steel/chrome fixtures. By keeping the shower area as dry as possible, slime and other undesirable accumulations like fungi, mould and mildew can be put at bay.
Regular Maintenance:
Regular clean-up is still necessary even when you wipe the shower area on a daily basis. Calcium build-up is a good reason to undergo regular maintenance, which can be done by following these steps:
In a large bucket, mix water and vinegar in 50-50 proportion.
Unscrew the shower-head from its arm or hose. Use an adjustable wrench for this task.
Soak the head in the water-vinegar solution overnight.
Rinse off the solution and then dry with a clean cloth.
Use a brush to remove mineral deposits.
Screw on the shower-head.
The shower hoses can be washed using the water-vinegar solution. This solution can also be used on the bathroom walls and floor, a natural and organic cleaner.
Water spots are also another maintenance issue that must be addressed as soon as possible. This is an easy step, too. Just wash the shower head, rinse in warm water and then dry off with clean cloth.
And then there's the slime build-up. You must remove as much of the black gunk as possible because it is the breeding ground of bacteria, germs and other harmful organisms. Slime serves as these harmful organisms' protection against the chlorine in the water, said chemical of which is added to water to kill the bacteria in the first place.
You can use either organic cleaners or ready-made cleaners depending on your preferences. Both are effective in cleaning the slime off the shower heads and hoses. Now, when the shower components are beginning to show signs of rust, you should consider changing these parts. Online sites provide for replacement parts so it should be an easy task, too.
With a little attention to cleaning the shower hoses and heads, your bathroom becomes a safer place to stay in.
