Founded in 1884, the company is best known for delivering its knives to the Swiss Army, which didn't really take off until 1891. And, their truly recognizable emblem--the cross within a shield--has been going strong since 1909, which happens to the be the year the mother of the founder (Katl Elsener) passed away, and he named the company "Victoria," to honor her.' However, it wasn't until 1921 that the "inox" (a French term for stainless steel) was combined with the honorary "Victoria." An appropriate amalgamation of feminine feel, and strong, utilitarian materials, the company's name definitely suits its products. Interestingly, it wasn't until 2005 that Victorinox acquired Wenger--a company who simultaneously works as an official supplier of the Swiss Army knife. While Wenger is technically a subsidiary of Victorinox, both brands still retain their separate entity names. Perhaps even more interestingly, Victorinox advertises its products as the "Original Swiss Knife," while Wegner claims the "Genuine Swiss Army Knife" line.

A few of the latest (and coolest) developments from the brand include the development of a credit card, dubbed the "SwissCard," which is roughly the size of a business card, boasts a small pair of scissors, short non-folding knife, small file (with screwdriver point), and tweezers--among many other nifty gadgets. How cool is that? Plus, you can even now purchase high-end cutlery from this funky brand.
