Keeping Your Baby Cool In The Summer

Baby's first summer can be a nerve wracking time for all new parents

. With all the factors you have to watch out for during the summer, as well as the added nerves of being a new parent, you can really feel shaky about your abilities. Any experienced parent will tell you the same thing, that there is a certain amount of trial-and-error involved. However, you should always use some common sense when it comes to dealing with your child in the summertime.

Protecting your child's skin from the sun is a good thing, but not at the risk of overdressing them. Keeping your babies delicate skin out of the sun is always a good idea. But you should also be careful not to over dress them either. Dressing your baby in light cotton is great and finishing the whole out fit off with a big, floppy hat will keep them as cool as a cucumber.

There is almost no way of avoiding the sun during the entire summer. many parents choose to keep their children out of the sun as much as possible instead of covering them in sunscreen and turning them loose. Whilst this is good in theory, in practice it can leave something to be desired. When you are out enjoying the sun with your baby, it is best that you use a good brand sunscreen with an SPF no lower than 30. Remember, even when in the pool you little one will need sun screen.

Pesky insects especially those mosquitoes are something else you will have to take into consideration come summertime. Whilst in the past they were no more than an annoyance, now there is a lot of concern regarding West Nile Virus. There are both standard and alternative methods for mosquito prevention that any parent can use. The idea of applying dangerous chemicals such as DEET to our children's skin is more than a little horrifying. The military developed the extremely dangerous and toxic chemical DEET and I don't think it was designed with babies in mind. Using rosemary or tea tree oil can help protect your baby from those nasty mosquitoes. Both of these oils are natural alternatives. If you have plans to spend time in the country then you will want to dress your baby in light cotton garments that leave very little skin uncovered.

If your little one is riding their trike then it is best to have them wearing a helmet to prevent any nasty injuries. There are far more children rushed to hospital because of avoidable accidents than there ever should be. It is a good rule of thumb to make sure that your child is always wearing a helmet if they are playing with anything that has wheels on it. Why not hook your child up to a baby harness if they are just taking their first step in the big bad world. This will give your child the freedom to wander around without the scraped knees and tears. Enjoy the summer while it's here and have a nice time with your little one.
