If you feel that you are unhealthy or that you need a change you should start by making sure that you are getting the right amount of sleep. Many American undervalue sleep and the effect that sleep has on our bodies.
As an adult, you should be getting about eight hours of sleep a night. If you feel that you are still tired you might need as many as ten hours of sleep a night.
If you are getting ten hours of sleep a night and you still feel lethargic you may be getting too much sleep. You should see a doctor that specializes in sleeping habits to help you figure out how long you should be sleeping every night.
A lack of sleep can have a negative effect on all other efforts you make to be healthy. If you do not have the energy to complete your everyday activities you will not have the energy to exercise.
Exercise is a key component in staying healthy. If you are not exercising your body will suffer.
Through exercise your body is able to take in more oxygen, increase muscle mass and even strengthen your heart. These are all important for your body.
Being tired may also increase the possibilities of having a poor diet or over eating. There are a lot of people that will eat only because they are tired and not because they are actually hungry.
Having a lack of energy may deter you from taking the time to cook a proper meal or to shop for a proper meal. If you do not cook and prepare balanced meals you will be much more tempted to eat fast food or other types of unhealthy quick foods.
If your schedule will not allow you to get enough sleep you should take the time to learn how to prepare meals quickly and efficiently. There are not a lot of people that have this skill.
After you have your sleep schedule down you should begin to work on your activity levels. If you have a desk job or you are sitting down for the majority of the day you may have to get creative.
Your body will probably not be used to strenuous activities when you first start to exercise. You do not want to overdo your exercising because you could easily hurt yourself.
Start by getting your heart rate up and keeping it up. Whether this means walking on an incline, jogging, running or even sprinting you should do it consistently to make sure that your heart is being strengthened.
You can also find ways to keep your heart rate up throughout the day. Instead of taking the elevator you can take the stairs.
Finding different ways to take more steps and work your muscles may sound intimidating but you can easily do it. Park your car in a spot that it further from your destination or walk the long way to the restroom at work.
Being healthy is something that we should all strive for but not just so that we can look good. There are a lot of silent killers out there that can go unnoticed for many years.
High blood pressure is one of the scariest ailments out there. You can have high blood pressure without even knowing and this condition can eventually cause heart failure.
Taking the time to understand your body and treat your body well will be well worth it in the end. You should also make sure that you are going to frequent check-ups with your doctor so that you can prevent diseases before they occur.
