Kenya Is Fighting Al-shabab

Now I guess you are wondering why in the world is it important that Kenya is fighting

al-Shabab and what reason in the world would anyone have to write an article about it. It is important because the US has an initiative to fight terrorists anywhere in the world. The problem with this is that we just dont have the forces or the finances to attempt to fight terrorists everywhere. In addition, many countries where terrorists operate just dont have the same resources, abilities, and priorities that we do.

The US has been training many of the countries on the African Continent to fight al-Qaeda because we knew that it was only a matter of time before they showed up there. Al-Shabab is an off shoot of al-Qaeda which is gaining a stronghold in Africa. They operate more on the part of the country near Somalia. They can operate freely in this area because it is more of a wild frontier not under government control. This gives them impunity to do as they will as long as they dont have any problems with the war lords that happen to control the land that they operate from. They have in a sense been the government in Somalia because they rule over the indigenous population of a large area of the country.

Operations in Africa in a sense are a part of an experiment to keep al-Qaeda under control around the world. Many of the African countries needed much training and the US through Africa Corps has accomplished much of this.

One of the things that the Kenyan military is doing is attempting to incapacitate the militant Islamist group al-Shabab by targeting its financial and logistical operations in Somalia. This is the way to do a lot of damage to their ability to operate because if you can keep them poor they wont be able to mount much of an offense otherwise. I personally believe that much of the proceeds from piracy in the Gulf of Aden is making its way into the hands of this group in general and al-Qaeda in particular. I wouldnt be surprised if much of it hasnt been used in Afghanistan and Iraq against the US and NATO forces.

The Kenyan military says that it is closing in on al-Qaeda targets so they must have uncovered some key intelligence. They are not talking just to talk.

Kenyan Army spokesman, Emmanuel Chirchir, says one of the most important objectives of Operation Linda Nchi is to take the southern Somali town of Afmadow.

They believe that Afmadow is critical to al-Shabab's operations, because it provides facilities for money transfers. This fact means that it is a place where they can perform other functions related to finance. This indicates that this is a good place to start. The military has said for weeks that its troops have been poised to advance on Afmadow. But heavy rains have made southern Somalia's dirt and sand roads nearly impassible, and have slowed Kenya's military advance on the ground. Kenya has still not disclosed how many soldiers are involved in operations in Somalia. The military is also relying heavily on its Air Force to hit al-Shabab positions. Air strikes near the port-town of Kismayo have been successful.

In Kismayo, it was one of the jetty's that's close to the port," said Chirchir. "There used to be a palatial home and they believe this was the nerve center where they used to plan their battles. But now, after the first incursion and the second incursion we've not had - they have resorted to moving back to the city to mix with the local population.

Kismayo is another important economic asset for al-Shabab, and a city where the United Nations says the group gets much of its financial and material support. Military Ring Express
