Ketepa Tea For Taste And Social Awareness
Ketepa tea is interesting for two reasons
Ketepa tea is interesting for two reasons. Number one, the tea is among the best in the world, being grown in Kenya and produced by following the best growing and production methods. Number two, the producer is a farmer-owned cooperative that brings prosperity to many small landholders in the remoter areas of this African country.
Taking the second reason first, the company is owned by its member suppliers, the over 370,000 small landholders who grow tea as their main cash crop. The name Ketepa stands for Kenya Tea Packers Limited, the organization that represents and supports the small farmers who depend on the sale of their tea for their living.
The company maintains a clinic for its staff members and their families. It also promotes education, primarily of girls who often have no way to get secondary and university training. The limited liability company supports schools and provides university fees for many students. It also is dedicated to quality rather than quantity in its tea production, producing a product that all concerned can be proud of.
The member farmers are small landholders who live in the Kenyan uplands, the best area for growing tea. They produce the crop for three main types of tea - white, green, and black, offered in loose packs, bags, and flavored varieties. All varieties come from the Camellia sinensis plant. White is the least processes and has the most antioxidants, green is next in flavor and health benefits, and traditional black tea is fermented for richer color and flavor.
Since the growers are dedicated to producing premier tea, they pick only the top two leaves and the bud of each plant. The leaves and buds are handled very carefully, protected from being exposed to air too long and being stored and packaged expertly every step of the process. In some forms, the leaves are granulated for the full release of flavor.
The Producers' website has information and many photographs of the growing and packaging of their products, as well as some of their community projects. They also offer brewing advice. It seems that the beverage should not be made with boiling water. Instead, the careful consumer will get the water just to the point if boiling and take it off the heat; this almost but not quite boiling water brews less bitter tea. Who knew?
All those who love tea and wish to make a positive difference in the world as well should seek out Kepeta tea, supporting the efforts of this African company with high ideals.
