Keys To Develop Talent In Your Organisation
Hiring and retaining talent is every organizations core activity
, and these are the two most difficult aspects to embark upon successfully. Both the processes go hand in hand, as once you bring good employees on board; it becomes quintessential for the organisation to focus on their growth so as to retain them.
More often it has been observed that most of senior managers show no keen interest towards developing talent within the organization. As a matter of fact managers who have shown interest in the training & development of employees at initial steps of their career lose this quality as they climb higher on the ladder of hierarchy.
For building an effective and competent workforce continuous Talent Development needs to be ingrained in the culture of an organization. It is understandable that a manager might not have respective hours everyday to spend with each employee of the team but it is still possible to create an environment of learning.
A few tips by Cori Hill, the director of high potential leadership development at PDI ninth house might prove fruitful in developing an environment which breeds learning and development:
Managers are employees role models: The managers should be transparent about their own needs of learning; this transparency motivates the employees to do the same. The employees should feel that higher management people look towards progressive up-gradation of their skills regularly.
Encourage development: Managers are responsible for coaching and mentoring their team members. They should let their team members identify their areas of improvement, once done the managers should offer effective guidelines which can enable the team to fulfill the recognized gaps.
Open communication about the value of learning: Discuss in team meetings and outings about any completed/ongoing projects that require learning. Appreciating an employees learning and using it in context of organizations objectives will encourage other employees to look into their skill set and find the areas where they need to develop.
Value of employees daily work: If employees are able to relate their job responsibilities to the goal of the organization, theyll value their own work. It makes employees aware of their responsibilities and improves their capability as they learn from their own mistakes.
Discuss the acceptable failure limit: If employees are aware of an acceptable failure limit, it will give them an option to learn and explore more freely. Stretch assignments can be a great platform for learning and development without the fear of being called as a failure.
In this manner the leaders can encourage and inculcate an environment of developing talent within an organization by giving due focus and time towards their workforce.
