It may not be the Jetson"s free-flying car or even a Bond-mobile

, but the new Kia Cadenza has some features that are futuristic and forward-thinking. Kia Indianapolis dealers are excited about the new Cadenza for lots of reasons and expect a lot of curious buyers to flood the showrooms and ask for a test drive with these new systems.

Several of Cadenza"s new technologies are in the electronic arena and have never actually been seen on the road. One of the new systems, the Parking Assistance System, has cameras which see the front and back of the car and use ultrasonic sensors to alert the driver of an obstacle in the car"s path. Depending on the distance between the vehicle and the obstacle, the driver will hear one of three different warning sounds. A warning light also appears in the cluster monitor. Another new system, the Lane Departure Warning System, can actually recognize road lanes and will set off a warning if the driver veers from the lane or changes lanes without using a turn signal. This is done through a camera that recognizes the lanes in front of the car. Not only is it a great safety feature, but also encourages good driving etiquette and might just save you from a ticket.

This system can recognize a yellow center line as well and two warning sounds per second will alert the driver that the vehicle is on the wrong side of the road. This could definitely be a life-saving system for sleepy drivers, distracted moms and those who just don"t pay much attention sometimes, putting the rest of us in danger.

Customers of Kia Indianapolis will be very impressed with the simplicity of the system. Yet it has such huge implications it should be required standard equipment on every vehicle manufactured. If seatbelts and airbags save tens of thousands of lives each year, imagine what this system could do, eliminating many of the situations where airbags come into use. It will be interesting to follow accident rates for drivers of the Cadenza in the next few months and see how much impact this system does make and how many drivers actually put it to use.

The only drawback might be for those who never use a turn signal and get tired of hearing the warning alert. They might be tempted to turn it off and miss out on an unparalleled safety system. The system can be activated when the car starts and kicks in once the car reaches a speed in excess of 60 mph. As a safety-conscious mom, I would personally like to see it active at lower speeds.

Kia is definitely ahead of the game with this new safety-oriented car and families will appreciate the effort being made toward safer family transportation.
