Kicking my way out of 50kg

I woke one February morning four years ago determined to lose weight

. I'm still not sure what suddenly clicked for me, but after 27 years of being obese - I weighed 127kg - this was going to be a life-changing venture.

Going to the gym didn't appeal to me, so when a friend suggested we start an exercise class that involved kicking and punching, I thought I'd give it a bash. Muay Thai was a little-known sport at the time, and I went to my first class thinking, How hard can this be?' My question was quickly answered. Muay Thai is not known as King of the Ring' for nothing - it's one of the most physically demanding and challenging martial arts, using every muscle

After that first class, I sat in the bathroom with tears streaming down my face, thinking, I can't do this.' But when my instructor asked if I was coming back, I defiantly replied, Yes.'

And so it began, two to three times a week. Muay Thai was the catalyst in my lifestyle change, along with a healthy, low-fat, low-carb diet. With the encouragement of my trainers, I lost 18kg in three months. The results inspired me to work even harder.

The Muay Thai gym holds competitions occasionally, and after watching an event, I knew I'd found my goal: I wanted to lose enough weight and be fit and healthy enough to get into the ring and compete. This became my greatest driving force. I knew I'd have to get into a ring in front of a crowd wearing a pair of shorts - something I hadn't worn since primary school.

There were times when I felt I was expecting too much from myself and my body; and times when I just couldn't continue, but the undying faith my teammates and instructors had in me kept me going. And in September stepped into the ring for my first competition - and yes, I was wearing shorts.

The most daunting part of my weight loss has been the mental adjustment. There are days when I still consider myself overweight, and I have occasional off days where I skip training and eat whatever I want, but I know this doesn't mean I've failed.

So have I achieved my goals? Well, one down and many more to go. But I continue on this adventure, still wanting do more - knowing that I can.
