Kitchen and Laundry Whiteware Appliances - A Must Have Installation Checklist!
Are you are in the process of acquiring whiteware appliances and are worried about knowing the ins and outs of installation? Have you been left in the dark about technical issues that might cause problems later on? Then this article is for you!
DISHWASHERS
Cabinetry for Dishwashers
Make gaps around the dishwasher as small as possible to avoid dirt traps.
Some dishwashers have no tops or sides including most integrated models so they need to be fitted hard-up under the bench top.
Integrated Dishwashers
Ensure your joiner has the correct installation information for these. They require special fitting by your joiner, as well as providing and installing the front panel to match your cabinets. Integrated dishwashers need to be installed by a qualified tradesperson.
Installation
Most dishwashers are cold only. Never connect up the drain hose to a waste disposal unit. Most problems associated with dishwashers relate to waste pipes and incorrect plumbing can result in blockages in the future.
Securing Dishwashers
To stop dishwashers tilting forward some models can be screwed into your joinery.
Old Dishwasher Replacements
Beware some old dishwashers may need a plumber as fittings have changed.
WASHING MACHINES
Front Loaders
Remove all transit bolts. Most front loaders have only one hose, so a hot connection may need to be blocked off by your plumber to avoid possible floods.
Installation Instructions and Measurements
To be safe, urge your kitchen manufacturer to measure appliances before making joinery if there is any doubt as models change often and suppliers put into their instructions a disclaimer in case they have made a mistake when printing. This also relates in particular to cooktops, wall ovens, freestanders and refrigeration.
REFRIGERATION
General Rules
Allow for air circulation around your fridge. Also be certain measurements include the height of the hinges etc.
After delivery a fridge should be allowed to settle in it's upright position before being turned on, this period should be at least two hours.
Many fridges are bulky and heavy and you should take the following into account when requesting delivery. For example, is the path taken by the delivery person easy, are there stairs, have you measured all doorways etc that the fridge has to be maneuvered through?
New kitchens - check your joiner has made the gap large enough.
Double Doors
Have these fitted with doors proud of your joinery, flush fittings create many, many problems.
Icemakers
Icemakers require a water connection close to the fridge freezer, advise your plumber in advance.
Refrigeration Hinging
Check you have the correct hinge option for your home. Most models of refrigeration need to be ordered as a left or right hand options. Kits to change a hinging are available on a few models but an additional cost is payable to purchase this accessory kit.
