What you did not know about genital herpes and Aciclovir

?

Genital herpes is a health condition, known since 1736 and has now become a major health problem for the public. Herpes simplex virus is the organism that causes this health condition. This virus has the ability to enter your body in a latent state and reactivate itself causing infection and other health problems. This virus has the capacity to cause recurrent infections in your body and this is the major cause of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Genitally, this virus attacks your body in two forms viz, the first episode and the recurrent herpes attacks.

Herpes simplex virus is of two types and both are known to affect the genital region. The incidence of types 1 and 2 is equal in patients. The severity of the attack depends on the previous exposure to the virus resulting in sero-antibody-positivity. If prior HSV antibodies are present in the individual's body because of previous exposures to the virus, the first episode of infection will be mild.

HSV virus

Sometimes, the first attack of this virus might be absolutely asymptomatic. A large percentage of patients complain of suffering from mild stinging and tingling on the affected site, most likely the genital area. This generally happens within a few hours prior to the breakout. The HSV can survive on wet surfaces for many hours and this may be a reason why it is longer lasting in women. Frequent attacks of this virus become bothersome and take a toll on the mental health of an individual. Generally, frequent attacks have an effect on the relationship of an individual.

Clinical trials

Most patients, as per clinical trials, get worried that this health condition cannot be treated and that it will affect their partners. In 1984, a medication named Acyclovir was introduced on the market for treatment of HSV infections. Subsequent reports confirmed that Aciclovir helps in suppressing the virus in the long term.

A study on this drug was undertaken in 1984, within a few months of its launch, to find out the effect of Aciclovir on patients with recurrent attacks of HSV. A diagnosis was made from typical morphology and site lesions that displayed the recurrent nature of attacks. At times, even a cytological examination was made to confirm the diagnosis. Most patients who had earlier received acyclovir were not involved in this study.

Initially, it was decided that certain patients in one group were to be given oral acyclovir 200mg, 5 times a day omitting the dose that was to be given at night for a period of 5 days. These patients complained of burning, itching, irritation and tingling within 24 hours of taking the drug. Some of the patients even remembered having attacks of HSV infections on other areas of the body. None of them complained of stinging or any sort of symptoms in the urethra. There were very less cases of conjugal infections. During a follow up, it was found that married men, who were infected, had intercourse with their partners did not infect their partners. This study has given hope to many people suffering from this difficult condition.
