Knowing Electrical Basics
Electrical systems within your home are main components
. Yet, it is very important for you to understand how this system works if you plan to do any electrical DIY work. In addition, be sure to follow all necessary safety precautions when doing any type of electrical repair. Keep the following in mind when you are doing any type of electrical work.
The electricity within the home is supplied by a local utility. This is done through three underground and potentially overhead wires. Two of these wires are hot leads and one of them is a neutral lead. They come into the home through a conduit and a meter. When they come within the home, they connect with respective buss bars. These are found within the service panel. In most homes, there are two hot and one neutral wire, plus one ground buss.
The circuit breakers will either slide or snap onto the hot buss bars. They work as a safety tool against short circuits and any overloads that could occur. If there is an overload or a short circuit, they will trip or turn off. In addition, the circuit breaker works as a switch. You can turn the circuit on and off using the circuit breaker.
The breakers then lead to outgoing hot wires. These are the power delivers to each of the devices in your home requiring power, such as a light. They normally have black insulation on them. In most situations, a cable with two hot leads will also have a red hot lead.
Finally, when you are doing electrical repair or electrical DIY installation, you should know that the electrical circuit is complete by the neutral wire, which is where the electricity goes back after it has done its work. This wire is usually white.
