Knowing Portable Light Source Options
If you think about it, when you wake up in the morning one of the first things you do is turn on the lamp to your bedroom
. You then flip the switch to the bathroom and do what you have to do to get ready.
When you head to your kitchen, you flip another switch. You turn on the lights to your car so you can see in front of you while on the road.
When you get to work, if the lights are not already on, you turn them on so you can see what you are doing. Rooms are illuminated, as are buildings, streets, cars, airplanes, phones, toys, even shoes.
And if you have to walk into a dark place, you either flip a switch or bring a flashlight. In fact, I bet when you are at home, you do not even notice all of the switches you slip on a daily basis.
These switches are great, but sometimes you have to travel and you do not have the luxury of a switch to illuminate things. You have to bring things like a flashlight or lantern with you to allow you to see your surroundings.
There are many different portable illumination sources that you can purchase and use for things like camping and emergency preparedness. Among them are lanterns, flashlights, LED lights, hand-crank illumination devices, and even fire.
All of these can be very useful, and each should be considered for your next camping trip, to keep in the car, or just to have around the house if the power goes out. Here is a run-down of some of the options available to you.
The first and most obvious option is battery-powered devices. Obviously technology is a tool that is meant to be used, and the use of batteries has made a lot of things in life extremely easy.
All that you have to do is push a button and bulb is all of the sudden bright and providing a way for you to see everything in front of you. The only drawback to these little power-sources is the fact that they usually do not last very long.
You can probably go a couple of days of constant use, but after that your power will run out and you will be left in the darkness. Because of this dilemma, there are alternatives.
The hand-crank lamp may seem old-fashioned, but it is a smart way to keep things illuminated for long spans of time. You may tire out your arm from cranking but the device will last you a long time in emergency situations and weekend camping trips.
A quality device should last several years without any problems. Realistically speaking, you would probably not need it in the daytime since the sun provides illumination, and only a fraction of the night.
So it is not like you would be cranking day and night just to power this little lamp. There is also a solar option.
You obviously need the sun to be shining during the daytime for this to work, but it is very energy efficient and you do not need to put any effort into it. All you do is set out the small solar panel during the day and the sun charges up the internal batteries so you can use it to illuminate things at night after the sun goes down.
A popular piece of camping equipment that could also be used in emergency situations is a lantern. These are usually powered by propane or some other fuel type, so you would need to purchase a supply of that as well.
Because they are powered by fuel, the light only lasts as long as the fuel, so if you need it for long spans of time you should buy a lot of propane to keep things going. Lanterns are also useful because they are a heat source.
This is very useful when camping and things get chilly at night. Since they are small, they can only realistically keep maybe your hands warm, but in a tent they may be able to keep you and your tent-buddies warm enough to last a night.
