The temple is set against the Kumara Parvatha hills and pilgrims have to cross the
nearby Kumaradhra river and take a holy dip in it before paying their obedience to the God. There is a pillar at the entrance of the temple that is reportedly charmed and absorbs the poisonous breadth of Vasuki who resides deep inside the temple thus sparing the pilgrims. The other temples in the complex are Vedavyasa Samputa Narasimha Temple, Adi Subrahmanya temple, the Shringeri Mutt, Raktheshwari Temple, Kashi-Katte Ganapati temple and a host of others.
Take a holy dip in the Kumaradhara River before you pay obedience to Lord Subrahmanya at his temple. It is more of a ritual that the pilgrims practice before their darshan of the Lord.
Events
Thaipooyam festival in Subramanya temple during January - February attracts many devotees. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Lord Subrahmanya, the youngest son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and the occassion when Parvati gave him a spear to overcome the demon Soorapadman.

It is a haven for the spiritually inclined and the plethora of temples will definitely whet your appetite. After you have paid your obedience to the different Gods, you can go trekking and there are lots of places to discover and enjoy. Trek to the top of Kumara Parvatha which is 4000 ft above sea
level and the trek will take you through dense green forest as well as some rocky terrain. The railway tracks on the Sakleshpur to Kukke Subrahmanya stretch makes for a great trek with its numerous tunnels and bridges, dense evergreen forest as well as streams and rivers. These treks are a must and the memories will remain with you long after you have returned to the fast paced life of the big cities.
Sights
On the way from the Subrahmanya Temple to Kumaradhara you come across the sacred cave of Biladwara . According to Hindu mythology Vasuki (the serpent king) took refuge in this cave while hiding from Garuda. It has a naturally made entrance and exit and devotees use the south opening to get
inside the cave. This cave is not accessible during the monsoons. Kukke Sri Subrahmanya temple is dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya.In ancient times the temple was under Hoisala Ballala Kings of Dwara Samudra. The idols of Lord Subrahmanya,Vasuki and Shesha reside here. There is a silver Garuda pillar between the sanctuary and the entrance and is believed to have been put there to shield the devotees from the poison flames streaming from the breath of Vasuki housed inside. Devotion to these deities takes place daily. Adi Subrahmanya is a famous religious destination in Kukke Subrahmanya. It is a shrine situated near the Subrahmanya Temple. There are two anthills here that are worshipped as Vasuki and Adisesha. The temple also houses a Hutha (a place where snakes dwell) and prayers are offered here everyday. A must see! The Hosaligamma temple ,is home to the shrine of Goddess Hosaligamma and the deity Purusharaya.This temple is south of the main Subrahmanya temple and these deities are believed to be the bodyguards of Lord Subrahmanya. Other significant religious places to visit here are the Vedavyasa Samputa Narasimha Temple, Matsya and Panchami Tirthas , Shringeri Mutt and Subrahmanya Mutt amongst others. Bisle near to Kukke Subrahmanya comprises the Bisle Reserve Forest, having to its the credit some of India''s most special rain forests. The beauty of this place is enchanting and makes for a great place for trekking too.

The nearest domestic airport is Mangalore approximately 115 km away. From the airport you would have to take a taxi to Kukke Subrahmanya.
How to get there by Rail
The closest railhead is Subrahmanya Road railway station, which is nearly 7 km from Kukke. From here you can take an autorickshaw or taxi to the Kukke temple.
How to get there by Bus
Regular KSRTC buses ply from neighbouring cities to Kukke Subrahmanya. Deluxe buses are also available from Bangalore and Mangalore to Kukke Subrahmanya.
Best time to Visit
September to May is the best time to visit the Subrahmanya but if you want to see the car festival, December is the time.
