LCD Display Monitors: How to Buy and Choose the Right One for Your Needs

LCD display monitors have taken technology in a whole direction. They're easy on the eyes (much easier than old, "flicker prone" technology), and because their prices have been dropping so significantly in recent years, they're very affordable. Let's take a look at what makes for good LCD screens, and what's right for you.

It's not always about price

It is true that some higher-end stores will charge more for LCD display monitors than others will, but when it comes to LCD screens, what you really want to look for is customer satisfaction with a particular model. Therefore, choose based on your needs, and then look for a monitor that fits those needs and that has gotten good customer reviews.

Do you really need all of those frills and features? Things to look for with basic LCD screens

If you're just going for good, basic LCD display monitors that'll give you a good picture and make it easy to see, choose a no-frills model; these generally retail for about $150-$200 for a 24 inch monitor. You'll probably also want height adjustability, ability to tilt, etc., so that you can adjust your screen to a comfortable position for you.

LCD display monitors can also come with fancy features like built-in USB ports, KVM switches, etc., etc., but you'll pay more for these features. Do absolutely look for LCD display monitors with these features if you need them, but again, they're not necessary for simple, basic office work -- and you'll pay dearly for them if you don't use them.

How important is color accuracy to you?

If you're going to be working on your LCD screen for basic "office" and computer tasks like writing letters, answering e-mail, surfing the Internet, etc., a good, basic monitor will do just fine. However, if you're into high-end graphics in that you are a graphic artist or something similar, you'll want something that has the ability to give you top-notch color and grayscale accuracy. For that, you'll pay significantly more than you will for a basic model, about five times the price or about $1000, but you're also guaranteed an exquisite display.

How big a display do you need?

LCD monitors run from about 15 inches to 30 inches, measured diagonally. Make sure you take a look at your computer desk and choose a screen that will actually fit. It's nice to have a large display, but not if you don't have room for it. A good, common size for most "office work" type applications are the 22 to 24-inch monitors, because they let you view multiple documents at once or watch movies, but they don't take up significant room.

What about "pixel response rate"?

"Pixel response rate" is measured in milliseconds, and denotes how long it takes a pixel to go from black to white or from one shade of gray to another. The faster the rate, the better the monitor's display "on the move" for things like movies, without "ghosting" or "blurring." If you're going to be doing a lot of gaming or watching movies, for example, you'll want one with a faster pixel response rate, but again, if you are simply doing mostly office work and watching the odd embedded video here and there, a slower pixel response rate for LCD display monitors will do well for you, and will be significantly cheaper for you than something faster.
