LTL Carrier and Trucking Jobs: The Fundamentals
LTL trucking job is a blend of relatively small cargoes coming from various shippers for delivery to different destinations
. The shipments weigh between 151 and 20,000 in pounds or 68 and 9,072 in kilograms and the rate of the packaged cargoes may come inexpensively compared to full-truckload carriers.
Truck drivers making a living in LTL trucking take the task of loading and unloading of shipment to and from a single container with cargoes obtained from the terminal hub. From the terminal points where the cargoes are weighed and inspected before loading to trucks, truck drivers coordinate with the dispatcher in the matters of delivery schedule as well as in the management of cargoes for delivery.
The typical scenario seen on LTL trucking is the pick-up of cargoes on certain period of the day and then the dispatching the cargoes for delivery on another half of the working hours of the day. Normally, truckers start their work with loading of shipments into the trucks or trailers from the terminal, after which the delivery of cargoes commences.
Upon emptying the trailers, remarking the end of delivery routes for the day, truckers collect freight from the shippers before heading back to the terminal for consolidation and sorting of cargoes to prepare for delivery on the next day. In most likely situations in LTL trucking, the pick-ups are done in the afternoon while delivery is in the morning.
However, schedules may vary and that comes the work of the dispatcher to organize and arrange the scheduling of shipments for pick-ups and delivery that works like a cycle.
Each truck driver has his or her own schedules set of routes to adhere in the trucking operation particularly during the delivery of shipments to intended and accurate destinations.
The job of making deliveries and receiving pick-ups can be done in a routine as this job is implemented in seven-day workweek schedule, somewhat untypical in most working situations particularly when a truck driver is also the owner/operator of a truck.
The good thing about this working situation in LTL trucking is that the truck drivers can establish rapport with customers, potentially increasing the chance of repeat customers.
During the unloading of shipments to terminal points after collecting the freight, truckers signal the end of their working period, a probable situation as the management of shipments is done in the terminal, limiting the participation of truck drivers unless otherwise preparing the shipments is part of the job description.
But most usually, certain personnel do certain jobs during the preparation, which include assessment of cargoes according to accompanying files, weighing and inspection.
Transit times, the span of period of cargo delivery from the shipper to the consignee may vary in LTL trucking.
LTL transit times rely on the networking structure of terminals and the process of individual handling of shipments from the breakbulk cargo. Taking the loads from the breakbulk to the terminal where time may be spent to properly weigh and inspect cargoes is a factor that will make one-day delivery impossible.
If the cargo is moved to a point where the sorting and routing is done and in which the point is also a delivering terminal, then the delivery of cargo can be done on the next day. However, distance of freight from its origin to destination should also be considered. The remoteness of the area of destination will also be factor in longer transit time that, in some instances, takes 10 days in LTL trucking.
Knowing the usual processes and activities in LTL trucking may be helpful to truck drivers applying for this type of trucking carrier. Truck owners and operators may gain fundamental insight on this information. But sometimes, it requires real observation based on real-time activities in LTL carriers to derive and become familiar with the activities in LTL trucking.
