Lag Bolts Vs Lag Screws, The Main Differences
Lag bolts and lag screws are same with a slight difference in the nature of the head they have
. Heads of the bolts are usually in the form of square or rectangle or hexagonal in shape. Where as the screw generally have rounded head with a slit on the surface where the instruments like screw driver can placed and the screw be driven in.
The bolts having head in shape of square or hexagon are tightened by the help of spanner of proper size or by wrench. Both these bolts are generally meant for the wood, wood block and wooden structures. The logs of wood or any structure those have to be fixed are placed together and the bolt or the screw depending on the thickness of the wood is driven in by the tools to secure the structure in place firmly. The bolts should have the capacity to stay in place intended for till the end. For this the bolts that are chosen should have good strength and the ability to withstand harsh atmospheric climate.
The lag bolt has a head with a cylindrical body starting from where the head ends is threaded with thread which cuts the wood in spherical motion into the wood in the direction of the motion of the rotation of the bolt, and then the head rests on the wooden structure and gets tightened. Then for additional security the nut also can be loaded from the other side of the bolt that is the threaded one. With this one can be assured of the sound grip of the wood together.
Lag bolts or screws are mainly made of carbon steel material. These possess good strength and forms good material for the manufacturing of the bolts or screws. There are also various other materials they are made out of. Lag bolts are also made out of stainless steel which are resistant to corrosion and have better strength than the one made of mild steel. The bolts made of stainless steel become costlier than made out of mild steel so has lesser demand. Now as the mild steel bolts have the tendency of reacting with moisture content in the atmosphere and getting corroded, these have to be treated so that it can it can resist corrosion.
Here comes the process called galvanization where the coating of zinc is given to the lag screws and bolts. This galvanization protects the bolts from rusting for a very long time depending on the quality of the galvanization during the manufacture of the bolts. As these bolts are usually used for structures that are for the outdoor work, the quality of bolts is of prime importance. Any defects in the bolts or in the process of galvanizing are discarded. These discarded or rejected bolts go over the process again.
These bolts are packed in suitable packing containers according the sizes of the bolts, their threaded pitch and dispatched either to consumer directly, to the dealer or to the retailer.
