Waste management firms have many issues to bear in mind when they engage in refuse collection. Concerns over the environment mean that more and more rubbish is being recycled. However, some of it still has to end up in the landfill sites dotted around the country.
Of course, these sites eventually fill up and new ones have to be created. One landfill area that has nearly reached capacity is situated in Worcestershire. The Marlbrook Tip near Bromsgrove has been used over recent years by building firms, which have dumped waste at the site.
According to Bromsgrove District Council, the 370,000 cubic metres of space at the location has nearly all be utilised, meaning the process of adding more items to it must stop.
Now, the owners of the site are set to use the rest of the space to put top soil and grass under the terms of a landscaping plan. It is thought the development will be complete sometime this summer and the land is to be used in the creation of a golf course.
Commenting on the developments, Councillor Jill Dyer, portfolio-holder for planning and regeneration, said: "This site has been controversial as nearby residents have complained about the number of lorries using the facility and the dust and dirt these create not to mention the noise.
"While this has significantly reduced recently I am delighted that, thanks to the council working closely with the owners of the site ... the only other dumping at this facility will be for final landscaping purposes."
Building companies are now sending their waste to another landfill site nearby.
It is not easy for waste management firms and other organisations to find suitable places to dump rubbish and thanks to recycling efforts, the amount of items being taken to landfill sites following refuse collection is falling.
