Landscaping DIY: Building A Waterfall With Pond

Selecting a location for a pond or waterfall is the initial and most important step of the installation process. The pond needs to have at least 4 hours of sun a day, and will benefit from some shade also. Make sure that landscape drainage will not flow into the location you choose. Of course, it is essential to be sure that the location is ideal for family to relax in.

After the decision of placement has been made, you will have to figure your measurements, and map out the area on the ground. The general shape of the overall plan needs to be lined out. This can be done with spray paint, which is more permanent than a chalk-line but will disappear when the digging starts. It is also possible for the location to be flagged. Utility numbers need to be called before a shovel ever hits the dirt.

The sides of the pond need to be dug out in layers, so that they do not crumble. This will also be more pleasing to the eye and provide a stronger foundation for plants to grow. Place the removed dirt onto the area where the waterfall will be. The floor of the pond should be level all over. Remove the dirt where the stream will be as well, and add it to the waterfall area.

After excavation the next step is to put the liner in place. First, lay sand down in the bottom, and smooth it out. Since it has to be spread-out and then walked to the pond, placing the liner is more than a one man job. Jerking the liner along the ground is not an appropriate way of transporting it to the pond. Be certain to purchase a good quality liner, as this is not a good place to skimp. It would be very unpleasant to have to undo all of your work just to replace a bargain liner.

Setting up the equipment is the next thing you will have to do. Water pumps, filters, and a skimmer for the water garden will be included in this part. Since you need an exterior outlet installed, it is best to pay a pro to do this.

After the equipment has been set up, it is time to add rocks and gravel. Adding a protective layer over the liner and laying rocks over that is a great way to protect it and keep it stable. Putting in different sized river rocks and gravel to the bed of the pond will make it look attractive and will support plant and animal life. After cleaning the stones, pump the nasty water out of the area.

Be sure all of the soil has been removed after the rocks are all in place. Use your hose to fill in the area with water. Unless you have a well, you will need to add a de-clorinater to the water. Otherwise, the chemical can harm any wildlife you may add to the pond.

The final step is to add the plants and wildlife. Plant life helps to maintain and clean and healthy pond. The animals should not be added until fourteen days after the plants have been there. This enables the plants time to clean the pond, and add nutrients to give the fish a healthy start.
