As you contemplate your landscape design, make sure you avoid these common mistakes.

Too Many Ornaments

A decorative sphere, water feature or statue can dress up a lawn and add a lovely finishing touch to your outdoor space. However, too much of a good thing is not pretty at all. Make sure that your lawn ornaments fit your overall design scheme, and consider sticking with just one or two.

Planting Flowers Wrong

You can kill your flowers and damage your overall garden design by planting your flowers wrong. First, make sure you choose a spot where the flower will get adequate sunlight and drainage for the type that it is. If it says it needs full sun, you cannot plant it in a mostly shady area of your yard. You also need to account for the growth of your plant. If you plant something that is tall in front of something that is short, you are going to dislike the design when the plants are fully-grown. Also, do not plant the flowers too deeply, as this can kill your plants. Dig a hole about as deep as the container they came in.

Poor Planning for Colour

Every landscape designer knows that colour is the most important factor to consider when choosing the look of a garden. You not only need to choose colours that complement the other flowers in your yard, but you also need to complement your house. If you have a red house, for instance, a garden full of pink may look out of place. Keep your garden plants in the same colour scheme, with an accent here and there of another colour for interest, but do not try to copy the rainbow when planting your garden.

Not Planning for Seasons

If all of the flowers in your garden bloom in the spring, your yard will be boring for the rest of the months of the year. Choose a variety of plants that will flourish at different times of the year. Also, choose a few plants that will give you winter foliage, if possible.
