Lapland skiing and the weather
Lapland, Finland offers some of the latest skiing into the season, with skiing sometimes possible until early may. It really does depend on the weather and if it stays cold enough for long enough then the skiing will continue until quite late. Lapland has experienced warmer weather over the last couple of weeks and the snow has fallen from the trees but this doesn't mean that it won't turn cold again but of course it could be a sign that spring is on it way.
The ski slopes in Yllas are now fantastic, catering for all levels of experience and there are three ski schools again catering for all abilities. Children are well catered for and family lessons are also a possibility. Cross country skiing is still going strong also with the tracks well and truly open and with the lighter nights, you can now ski in daylight rather than under floodlights. In the midst of December the days are short and the cross country ski tracks are lit by huge lights which does actually make it quite magical, especially at Christmas time. The downhill ski slopes are also well lit in the months of December and there is something quite magical about being up there in the half light.
The villages in Lapland are still bustling at this time of year as many people want to fit in some last minute skiing but the snow is showing some signs of melting down in the village where it is somewhat warmer. The pavements and walkways are often nearly clear of snow in the month of April and it is not until you go up onto the ski slopes and into the heart of the national parks that the snow piles up once again. Lapland also has nice temperatures in April and the weather is not too cold which is ideal for families with smaller children. The months of December and January are the coldest and small children often get cold if they are out too long but in April it is warmer and really quite pleasant.
Cross country skiing is not just confined to the tracks, many locals and holiday makers go cross country skiing across the frozen lakes which are still well and truly frozen at this time of year. Lapland is a lovely place to be at any time of year but I think April is an ideal time and there is still enough going on to make it an ideal holiday destination.
