Laptop Theft – The Statistics Show Themselves

Thieves love laptops

Thieves love laptops. Expensive, easy to hide and loads of information on them.

More often than not, the information on a laptop is more valuable then the laptop itself and that is what the thief is going after.

With over a million laptops lost or stolen each year, protecting the information stored on these mobile machines is vital.

According to the FBI, less than 2% of the lost or stolen laptops are recovered. The FBI themselves can't account for their 300 lost laptops that occurred during the 9-11 Commission Hearing. Imagine the information that was on these computers?

We're talking only reported stolen laptops too. These numbers don't represent all of the laptops that were left in taxis or on seats at the airport. More than half of those laptops go unrecovered.

So what happens to all of the information?

If you're lucky, nothing. The laptop gets wiped clean and sold for some quick cash. But in reality? Probably a lot. Just think for a minute about what you have stored.

Credit Card Information

Bank Information

Personal and Business Contacts

Social Security Numbers

Addresses and Telephone Numbers

Private and Confidential Information

If this information were to fall into the wrong hands it could be a disaster.

Thankfully there is now anti-theft programs available that should be installed on every laptop there is. This program will track your laptop after it has been stolen, tell you where it is, and even show you a picture of the thief through the web cam.

Snuko's Anti-theft program can also backup your data after the laptop has been stolen and lock the computer down, rendering it useless to the thief.

Securing your laptop with anti-theft programs is as important as having a burglar alarm at your house. A laptop is personal; in the wrong hands it can become a weapon to be used against you.
