Laser Hair Removal - What to Expect
A mustache is not a favorite accessory for a little black dress
. Embarrassing hair in unnecessary places can drive a person crazy. Laser hair removal can be a girl's best friend. The very word laser sounds scary, and the fact that a doctor is involved is intimidating. It isn't like a pedicure or a wax. Not to mention a wax is a short term fix for a long term problem. Laser hair removal has long lasting and sometimes permanent effects.
A beam of laser light is emitted from a light wand onto the skin and absorbed by the melanin in the root of the hair follicle. Melanin is the pigment that causes skin to tan and hair to have color. Because dark skin contains so much melanin, it is not as easy to treat for hair removal and requires an experienced technician or doctor to do the procedure. It takes skill and practice to target the laser at the shaft of the hair and not on the surrounding skin.
Laser hair removal is not for everybody. Blonds and redheads may have more fun, but are not so lucky in the laser treatment category. Blonde and red hair are too light and do not contain the melanin pigment that the laser is looking for. Laser treatments can be done on blondes and redheads, but with less desirable results.
Dark or tanned skin is also difficult to treat because the laser is looking for the melanin in the hair follicle. Dark or tanned skin contains a lot of melanin and therefore, the beam of light is attracted to the skin, rather than the hair.
The ideal person for laser hair removal is pale and dark haired. If you look like Snow White or Wonder Woman and have excessive hair in unwanted places, you are the ultimate candidate for laser hair treatment.
So what exactly are you getting into when you decide to have hair removed from your face or body? First of all, it is a medical procedure that is not covered by insurance. There are no health risks to being hairy so the insurance companies don't consider it a necessary procedure.
Picking a laser treatment clinic or dermatologist is necessary for a good result. Experience is important since the wrong laser for your kind of hair and skin color can cause blistering and scarring. Certification is required and desirable when it comes to putting a laser on your skin and especially on your face. With that said, laser hair removal is not painful and there is no bleeding and little discomfort afterward. The results can be patchy and even though the word "permanent" is used, it isn't permanent. Maintenance treatments will be needed permanently.
After the pre-consultation to gather your medical history and discuss your concerns, a treatment can last ten minutes to an hour. Shaving the day before the treatment is beneficial, but waxing or plucking should be avoided for three weeks prior to your appointment. Several treatments scheduled every four to eight weeks are often needed to create a lasting effect.
After putting on fashionable, protective eye goggles, the doctor presses the laser instrument against your skin. Wimps and anxious types can ask for a topical anesthetic, but a cooling cream is applied to sooth the skin afterward. During the treatment, some people describe a tingling sensation at the laser treatment site. A smell of singed hair is sometime noticeable and completely normal.
After the treatment, your skin may be a bit red and tender, but nothing that would cause you to miss work unfortunately. In extremely rare cases, swelling and crusting can happen but disappears fairly quickly. Sweat and exertion could cause the area to be irritated and should be avoided the first day after treatment. Sunscreen should be liberally applied to the skin and avoid sun for several weeks.
Once the mustache is gone, that little black dress will need a new accessory. A perfect excuse to buy a handbag or new shoes!
