Lauan Plywood; What Is It?
Lauan plywood is absolutely wonderful for building things
. It is considered tropical plywood. But what exactly is this? Where can you find it? Is it worth the cost?
First of all, you need to understand the very basics of plywood. Plywood is not whole pieces of woodand it isnt always a flimsy, wet, gross, mildewed board that you end up throwing away. In fact, plywood can actually be stronger than hardwood!
Its all in the grade of plywood. The grade of plywood is dependant on several things. The really gross looking boards that you use to temporarily cover a hole or some other minor problem is usually extremely low grade board. The front or shown side of plywood may be graded differently than the unseen back.
However, if you look on a hardwood floor, you may find that it is mostly comprised of hardwood plywoodwhich is the category in which Lauan plywood falls.
With this in mind, you also need to understand the other categories of plywood.
There is, as mentioned, hardwood plywood. This can be used pretty much anywhere as far as flooring and walls are concerned.
Softwood plywood is a bit less sturdy and isnt normally used for flooring. It can, however, be used for the walls orfor lower gradesas a temporary cover up.
Then, there is the special plywood category. This includes marine plywood.
Marine plywood is the only plywood that should be used near the ocean or other bodies of water. However, you need to remember that even these are not waterproof and may suffer from water damage. The best way to preserve it is by leaving it out of the water.
This also means that when it comes to Lauan plywood that you remember it is not marine-grade plywood. It would not do you well to use this for a yacht or anything of that nature.
However, Lauan plywood is great for a few thingsincluding flooring. You can use it decoratively, or because of how strong it is.
Keep in mind that you are not limited to just flooring. You can also use this type of plywood as a very pretty, very decorative wall.
Another thing to remember is that most plywood is created with its use in mind. This means when you shop that you need to make sure that you have chosen the correct type and that if you decide to seal it for any reason that you make sure that you will not compromise the integrity of the glue in which your plywood is put together with.
With that in mind, you may be happy to know that Lauan plywood is very inexpensive and that you can buy a large panel of this wood for under twenty dollars. Luckily, this plywood is easy to find and you may be able to find it in your local hardwood store.
