Tracking cell phones is a tactic that is often used by police and other types of

law enforcing agencies to aid in arrests, and the obtainment of information. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), who is the branch that watches for illegal transference of both street and pharmaceutical drugs, was actually able to track a vehicle that was hauling a load of illegal narcotics, because the individual driving the vehicle had a cell phone in his possession that remained on throughout the trip. Other states have used this technology to crack down on drug trafficking themselves, and the results have been extremely positive. Many cellular companies maintain logs showing the location of cell phones at the time calls were placed and these logs have been used in many court trials ranging from custody battles to murder trials.

This is indeed a great stride in the aide to criminal apprehension, but some people are asking "how far is too far?" This leaves us wondering where the line is drawn between obtaining information that is of importance to public safety and the invasion of the public's privacy. This is a debate that will be around for many years to come. As technology progresses these types of possible privacy infringements will become more pressing. When the technology for bugging phones and recoding conversations was new, there were debates about privacy. Now they are so common place that everyone expects it. Cell phones is not the only way technology can help the law possibly invade privacy. It is so easy right now for not only the law but everyday day people to get private information on you. There are programs out there right now that can track you cell phone position, your conversation, the keystrokes that are made on your keyboard. If you have a little IT knowledge you can hack into a person's email account, social networking sites, bank accounts and the list continues. At the moment, it is hard to determine exactly how far is too far, but in the future there will be systems and laws in place to protect the public's privacy.
