Lawn Maintenance - Gear Up For The Season Ahead
As you get ready to welcome the winter season
, you need to understand that lawn maintenance requirements too would change. You would have to address these immediately in order to have a lawn that is healthy enough to usher in spring later on.
The first aspect is the clean up you need to do. The rain and winds would have unsettled many of the oak leaves onto the ground and since these are not easy to mulch, you need to accumulate them at a spot by blowing them to gather them later on.
It is always better to get into the new winter season on a clean slate. Leaving these on the ground will lead to the grass getting discoloured and they would also become matted as well as heavy. Piled up leaves will attract insects, produce odour, weeds and other diseases associated with an unkempt lawn. So do the clean up at the earliest. That is the first lesson of lawn maintenance you will do well to follow.
Next in line is to prepare the soil. Using compost tea is a wonderful amendment that can be used on not only house plants but also on gardens and lawns. It promotes organic growth and provides the appropriate nutrients for the soil. This is made out of keeping or immersing a compost bag for some time in aerated water.
You can add molasses to it as well in order to feed this compost with rich microorganisms and fungi. These break down this matter into nutrients that can be consumed by the plants.
Then you have the technique of top dressing the turf with the compost that has been prepared.
Earlier this used to be done to maintain golf courses. But over time, the benefits of this technique and the ease with which you can achieve outstanding results for lawn maintenance have prompted many to consider this method.
You can either use a top dressing machine or do it manually to create a half inch layer of compost. This can then be ingrained into the lawn using some sprinklers or natural rain water. Doing top dressing especially in the early fall days after the usual aerating will give you a thick and luxuriant lawn.
Just a word about the sprinklers and the mower though. If you are a northern part resident then you need to winterise the sprinklers and the mower at the earliest so that the mulching of the final batch of leaves can be done quickly. Other tools used such as the shovels, ice melt should be put away safely for use till the next season.
The idea behind the exercises above is to get the activities done before the freezing impact hits the ground since once that happens, the fertilisation efforts would go in vain. Lawn maintenance is all about making best use of prevailing weather conditions and the tools at your disposal so that you do not lose out on the timing and the associated advantages.
