Lead Generation And The Politics Of Spite
If you have been studying Internet marketing for a while (and I mean for even a short while)
, you've undoubtedly heard the phrase, "The money's in the list." And you may not get it. You may hear it, but just ignore it. But believe me, that's the most important asset your business will ever have, and it's so important that you can't afford to ignore it. You should be concentrating on lead generation from the day you came online.
But let's say you've already started to build your list. You have a few hundred names and email addresses going for you, but what do you do with them? Do you send them nothing but marketing messages? Have you neglected to provide good content so that you can bond with the people on your list? Well... That's where the spite comes in. People will become fed up with your continued sales, sales, sales attitude, and guess what? They'll unsubscribe for spite. They just won't want to hear from you anymore.
And guess what else? They'll be sure to tell their friends and anyone else who will listen that you're a horrible spammer and that people should stay far, far away. Yep. You'll find that when you make one person -- just one -- really unhappy, they'll be sure to let other people know, and within the online community, that could mean bad publicity on the Internet that lasts forever.
Instead, treat the people on your list like royalty. Give them a velvet robe and a golden scepter. Make them feel as if you have their best interest at heart... and mean it! These are the people that will support you. They're your bread and butter. They have given you just a hint of trust by signing up for your list in the first place. It's your job to make that trust grow.
When people like you, they come to trust you even more. Give them free gifts, great content, and stuff that they can really use in your niche. For example, if you're in the golfing niche, ebooks on improving swing would go over well. If you're in the health niche, anything that teaches more about swine flu right now would create that bond. People are scared or their golf scores are downright embarrassing, perhaps. Take whatever problems the people in your niche are having and help them to solve the issues. When you can do that, the people on your list will also come to know you and as the trust grows, they'll end up accepting any product recommendations you make to them.
