Learn How Being Over Stressed Can Affect Your Health
Stress is an essential component in our lives
Stress is an essential component in our lives. Without stress we would not really feel alive, life would be dreary and dull without it. Stress gives us the edge to meet those important deadlines, the ability and courage to take on challenges, to think creatively and also help us fight infection.
Stress is an emotional function that is as old as when the first humans walked this earth. In those days when life was considerably more dangerous than it is now, stress was a trigger to the 'fight or flight' reaction. This was useful in situations where your life was being threatened by a wild animal that wanted you for its dinner. The 'flight or fight' reaction raises the adrenaline levels in the body to make it more prepared to cope with dangerous situations.
Adrenaline raises the body's heart rate which also raises blood pressure. If you are getting stressed on a regular basis you are putting your health at risk. There are many adverse side effects of experiencing stress on a regular basis. Emotionally you can feel like you are losing control through a sense of panic and anxiousness. You can over exhaust yourself and this can have an adverse effect on your immune system and increase your risk of infections and succumbing to colds and flu's. Other symptoms can include chest pains, heart palpitations, hair loss and loss of appetite. Many people who are over stressed suffer from skin conditions and rashes because the stress can raise hormone levels that affect the sebaceous glands.
Stress can be a natural result of organising a big event such as a wedding or going for an important job interview. This is fine as these situations do not happen very often. If stress is caused by the daily pressures of life that are a result of having too much to cope with then, stress can become a serious problem.
To cope with stress requires putting your life into perspective. For example, is arriving late for an appointment really that important to get stressed over? Is it a life threatening situation? It is important to relax about such things. Also, it is important to look at your life and decide if the commitments you are making in certain areas are worth it. If you feel that you have taken on too much, perhaps it is best to let those commitments go. At the end of the day your health should be your most important commitment.
