Learn How The Ivf Procedure Works

In vitro fertilization (commonly referred to as simply IVF) is a process of assisted

reproduction that provides infertile couples a chance to have a baby that is biologically related to them. More than 200,000 babies have been born as a result of using the IVF procedure and it is now recognized worldwide as an established way of treating infertility.

With IVF, a man's sperm and the woman's egg are brought together in a laboratory dish, where fertilization occurs. The embryo which forms is then put into the uterus (womb) of the woman to develop naturally. Usually, 3 or 4 embryos are placed in the woman's uterus at one time. Each attempt at this is referred to as a cycle, with the cost of each cycle being approximately $10,000.

Here are some more details of what exactly is involved in each cycle...

The woman may be administered certain drugs (hormones) in order to stimulate her ovaries to create a number (5+) eggs. A surgeon then inserts a needle into the woman's ovary to take out the eggs. Whilst that is taking place, a semen sample is taken from the man. A laboratory procedure then takes places to separate the sperm from the semen.

Next, the sperm will be mixed in a laboratory dish with the eggs. About 18 hours after this fertilization procedure, the laboratory dish is examined to determine if any of the eggs have fertilized and if embryos have grown as a result. Should this have happened, they will be incubated over the next 2-7 days. After that time, the embryos will be transferred back to the woman using a catheter (a long slender tube). She is then given a course of hormones to take for the following 10-14 days. If the implantation works (which is the case if any of the eggs attach to the wall of the uterine and grow), a pregnancy test result will show as positive.

The success rate of this procedure is 37% among women younger than 35 years, 28% for those between 36-39 years, and 13% in those who are 40+ years. On the basis of the those percentages, the total cost of IVF is normally more than $20,000, as the odds are against a couple suceeding at their first attempt.

Finally, research has proved that children born as a result of the IVF procedure are at least as healthy as those born naturally. The only major complication comes in the increased risk of multiple births happening, with the likelihood of twins or triplets being perceptibly higher.
