With most people experiencing dandruff at some point in their lives, the question of how to get rid of dandruff is one that has been asked many times. Although scientists don't yet know the true underlying cause of the condition, there are some ideas about what might lead to that itchy head and white flakes that are part of having dandruff. Here you will find some common solutions that might help keep your dandruff under control.

1.Dietary change may help control dandruff.

A diet that is high in foods like sugar, caffeine and highly processed or refined foods may cause irritation to the scalp. This in turn may lead to dandruff. Also, some dietary deficiencies, such as zinc and Omega 3, may contribute to dandruff. If you would like to know more about the potential impact of your diet, talk to your family doctor or a nutritionist. You may be advised to take dietary supplements, or to make some adjustments to your diet.

2.Poor quality shampoo and conditioner can have a drying effect.

Supermarket brands of hair care products may not be of the highest quality, and as such may actually be causing damage to your hair and scalp. Your local salon can recommend products that will help nurture your head and scalp.

3.Anti-dandruff shampoo.

Failing the first two suggestions, you could give anti-dandruff shampoo a go. There are many different brands to choose from, differing mainly in their active ingredient.

Those brands which use Zinc Pyrithione, or Zinc Omadine, as their active ingredient are the most common. It has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. The biggest problem with these products is that the condition may actually end up worse than it started once you stop using the product.

Selenium sulfide and ketoconazole are anti-fungals. It is not uncommon for the dandruff to return once you stop using these products.

Although listed by NIOSH as carcinogenic, coal tar remains popular in the treatment of dandruff, head lice and psoriasis. It is a substance created as a by-product of the distillation of coal.

4.Consult a dermatologist.

If you are not getting anywhere with your condition through the various treatments you have tested out, try talking to a specialist. They will be able to give a full assessment of your condition and create a treatment plan that takes into account your unique case.About the Author:
