Learn More About The Different Types of Heartburn Treatment
Heartburn is a normal medical condition and is usually non-threatening
. The pain or discomfort felt when experiencing heartburn is due to the acid reflux from the stomach. Our stomach is kept closed by the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle so that food particles and gastric acids are kept from coming back up to the esophagus.
The LES muscle may sometimes fail to close properly or may open unexpectedly and these occurrences allow stomach acids, such as hydrochloric acid, together with some pepsin and bile to shoot up the food tube. The effect of the acid on the esophagus is the burning feeling or pain that is experienced during heartburn. It is often easy to relieve the symptoms and heartburn treatment may include both natural and medicinal ways.
Home-made Heartburn Treatment
Teaspoon of baking soda added to a glass of water can act as an antacid. It may neutralize acids in the stomach and the esophagus to bring instant relief from the discomfort of heartburn.
Another drink that could give help with heartburn is a mixture of 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a glass of water.
Drinking 250 milligrams of buttermilk also gives immediate relief. It helps neutralize stomach acids in the esophagus and stomach. In contrast, milk which is mistakenly taken as a cure for heartburn causes more acid build up in the stomach on the onset of its digestion.
Aloe Vera juice as well as fresh fruit juices of mango, papaya, guava, pear, apple and banana is known to bring relief to heartburn.
Eating a banana before meals helps line the esophagus with potassium that helps protect the esophageal lining from damage and hurt that acid reflux may bring. A banana-cinnamon sandwich or a banana shake are also tasty and effective heartburn treatment.
Juice from raw vegetables such as cabbages and potatoes is also effective against heartburn.
An on-the-go heartburn treatment includes unsalted almonds and unsalted or bland soda crackers.
Medicinal Heartburn Treatment
Antacids are the most often cure for heartburn. The main action of antacids is to neutralize the stomach acids. A lot of antacids are non-prescription drugs such as Alka-Seltzer, Maalox, Mylanta, Riopan and Tums.
H2 blockers also help in relieving heartburn. H2 blockers slow down the acid production in the stomach. H2 blockers are more effective taken around 20 minutes before a meal. Examples of over-the-counter H2 blockers are Axid, Pepcid, Tagamet and Zantac.
Another heartburn treatment is Proton Pump Inhibitors or PPI's. The final step of acid production includes the action of a proton pump in an enzyme. PPI's stop this important step in the production of acids in the stomach thus stopping the acid production. Some OTC PPI's include Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and Zegerid.
