Everyone knows the main difference between red and white wine is the colour

. One of the other ways they are different is the taste. A red wine has a much heavier taste then white but also a much more complex. The white on the other hand has a much sweeter taste even though there are some sweet reds, whites are generally sweeter.

White wines are made by taking the skin of the grapes and taking the juice. After this you use yeast for fermentation until the juice changes to wine. The wine is then placed in oak wood containers or sometimes made from stainless steel.

Making red wine is different to making white wine. The red grapes are crushed and left to ferment with their skins. It will take around 1-2 weeks for this process to happen. During this time the skins of the grapes will raise to the top of the fermenting juice, they are mixed back into the mixture to carry on fermenting.

When the wine has finished fermenting, the wine needs to be put through a wine press to be clarified. When this is done the red wine is stored away in oak barrels for a few months before it is put into bottles. By storing the red wine in oak barrels you are adding extra tannin to the wine which is found in the oak barrels. This gives the wine an extra flavour which is not found in white wine.

One of the main differences between red and white wines is its taste. The difference of taste is partly down to the amount of tannin each contains. The red wine has the extra tannin dues the skins of the grape being part of the mixture. The white grape skins are removed during the wine making process.

When you are shopping you may notice there are more flavours within the red wine section than there is in the white wine section. If you believe the things that are written these days then red wine has added health benefit compared with white wine. This is something else to consider next time you are out doing your food shop.
