Learn The Risks Of Liposuction Surgery Before Deciding To Do It

Learning the risks of liposuction along with the benefits of the procedure is the best way to back an accurate decision

. Many people only see the benefits of the procedure. They view it as a glamorous and easy way of riding the body of unwanted fat and looking younger. Many patients want the procedure without understanding all of the risks.

The success stories are often the only stories written about liposuction. However there are a number of risks that come with and surgical procedure. Health professionals are worried that patients and surgeons are loosing sight of the need to weigh all the possibilities and risks of the procedure.

The procedure is an elective surgery, therefore, many health professional have a very low tolerance for unsafe or harmful out comes. An elective surgery means that it is not necessary for the health of the patient. It is only performed as an enhancement of the body. An elective surgery can become a life threatening procedure just as fast as a medical surgery.

Ann Graham, a senior nurse consultant in CDRH's Office of Surveillance and Biometrics explained her concern for the misrepresentation of the risks involved in lipo procedures in a news article by health.discovery.com. Here concern sheds light on the fact that cosmetic surgeries are not always represented properly and the good reports do not represent the entire picture.

"We are concerned about the published reports of patients who have not had a good outcome. They have undergone liposuction for weight reduction, not just body sculpting. Liposuction, in general, is a purely elective procedure. As such, our tolerance for an unsafe or harmful outcome is extremely low," said Graham.

While surgeons have the responsibility to inform their patients about the many risks the patients should be researching the different methods and possible risks for themselves. The most important thing for patients to realize is even though this is an elective surgery it is still a surgery. Trauma is caused on the body in order the breakup the fatty tissue.

It is a meticulous process to extract the fatty tissue manually from the body. It can take a lot of time for the body to heal from the immediate change and pressure it undergoes. Often a lot of bruising and swelling occur. There are other times when infections or internal problems occur. Many procedures are successful but there is always a risk that sometimes may go wrong.
