. As a freelancer, I used to spend more time with my computer and on some occasions I work continuously with less break times. I come across some occasional hardware problems, and rush the machine off to a repair shop. Most of the time, the cost of repairs seems to be a bit high in proportion to the original cost of the machine, and I might not have been quite sure what was actually done. Doing some research over the internet, I was able to figure out a way to learn and do my own peripheral diagnosis and repair works. It is worthwhile knowing what is going on inside the box, even if I do not do the work myself. With a good understanding of the likely causes of the hardware problems, I can now be more confident that the repairs carried out are reasonable and necessary.

To begin with, a good source of technical information is necessary. You can always ask at your local electronics shop for books or manuals. But if you really dont know what you are talking about, the embarrassment can be a big turnoff. Internet is the best place to learn about anything since you get access to millions of electronic books or informative how-to videos for free or for a low cost when compared to physical learning materials. You just need a fast internet connection like the one offered by Time Warner Cable to view or download streaming tutorial videos. Make a quick search with your preferred search engine for e-books and tutorial videos on computer assembling or hardware, you will be amazed to see hundreds of informative resources. Choose any one of the beginners guide and start with basics.

The next step is to choose a few projects to get familiar with your PCs internal peripherals. You can start off by stripping out everything from the cabinet and then carefully put them all back together. This is a very basic step which will give help you know the content of your CPU box. If your computer still works after reassembling, it means that you have made a pretty good start. At this stage, you might be thinking, Hang on a minute, I paid a lot of money for my system and I am not going to risk with it.

No, as a beginner, you definitely should not take that risk. You can get hold of some old computers to tear apart and rebuild. Old computers are considered worthless. You can find machines from the ages of Pentium 1/2 that are devoured into pieces, even though they are still in good working order. Even a Pentium 3 can be bought for very cheap and most of these are pretty good performers. A word of warning be wise on how widely you spread the news about your new interest in old computers. You will be surprised how many 486s and older are sitting in cartons in garages and basements; your friends and family will really be delighted to give you an amazing collection of electronic junks. Get familiar with the various parts, and how they fit together. Learn to identify the different styles of processor chip, RAM, disk drives and other components.

As always, safety is very important. The components of the computer themselves operate at low voltages, but you still have the high voltage main line entering into the power supply of the cabinet. Always power off and unplug when you are working on the computer and be suspicious of any signs of overheating or of burning odor. Enjoy your new learning venture.
