Learn the Causes of Acid Reflux

Do you suffer from acid reflux? How about heartburn

?

These are not really two separate conditions. If you frequently have a bad case of heartburn, you have acid reflux. Once you know more about acid reflux, you can usually prevent it or at least manage it. You may have to give up some regular habits, and visit your doctor once in a while, but there's no reason why this condition has to be a major part of your daily life. It helps if you can identify the causes of this ailment. The purpose of this article is to identify some common acid reflux causes so that you will be in a better position to manage this condition.

A visit to your doctor should be the first thing you do. In some cases, symptoms are caused by something known as a hiatal hernia. With hiatal hernia, your LES and upper stomach are pushed above the diaphragm, which interferes with normal functioning. Under normal conditions, acid should not rise out of your stomach, and the diaphragm is what prevents this. When you have this kind of hernia, however, there is nothing to stop the acid. The only way to get things back to normal is to have surgery. Sadly, it Is either that or learn to deal with the acid.

Do you exercise regularly? If you don't get enough exercise you are more prone to acid reflux attacks but careful not to do certain activities too strenuously. Not exercising hampers the body's ability to function properly. This sluggishness means your body is not processing the acid in your stomach properly, leading to an attack of acid reflux. Try to get at least a little bit of exercise every day. The exercise does not need to be high impact-a brisk walk is often enough.

Believe it or not, some people experience acid reflux as a result of doing certain exercises.

When some people exercise the abdominal wall, they are prone to acid reflux episodes. If too much pressure is exerted on the stomach, stomach acid can be pushed into the esophagus. Don't use this as an excuse to quit your exercise program! But when it comes to exercising your abdominal muscles, don't do high impact exercises if they produce these symptoms. Another good idea is to avoid eating for a while before you go to the gym. Your doctor or an exercise trainer may be able to give you more tips on how to exercise in ways to reduce the likelihood of triggering acid reflux symptoms. Most of the time acid reflux is very easy to avoid. Keeping stress at bay, eating the right food and making smart lifestyle choices are usually all that is needed to keep from experiencing heartburn. Talk to your doctor about what the major causes might be for acid reflux. Together you and your physician will be able to see what course your treatment will need to take in order for your symptoms to be under control.
