Learning About Iron County, Michigan
Iron County is located in the upper peninsula of the state of Michigan in the northeastern United States
. The area of upper Michigan is made up of the cities and villages of Crystal Falls, Iron River, Caspian, Gaastra, Amasa, and Alpha.
Each area has its own specific and unique attractions. Take a visit to the Iron Country Courthouse, found in the city of Crystal Falls, Michigan.
The castle-like structure, built in 1890, was part of a debate in the late 1800's regarding where it should be built. Crystal Falls was the chosen city, much to the dismay of other surrounding areas, and the courthouse still stands there to this day.
The building overlooks the valley that leads to the area of Crystal Falls. On a clear day, you can see across the majestic valley for miles.
Also located in this town is the Paint River Boardwalk. The Paint River flows into the Brule River and the Michigamme River, which when converged, form the Menominee River.
Depending on the area of the river and the depth of the water there, the bottom is covered with sand, gravel, and rock. Those that enjoy fishing should spend a day trying to make a catch in the Paint River.
Though there are some trout in the upper region of the Paint River, it is best known for the plentiful amount of Smallmouth Bass found there. The boardwalk along the paint river provides lovely scenery and informational kiosks to inform visitors about the region.
While in Crystal Falls, you should also pay a visit to the Harbour House Museum. The historical home was built in the 1900's for the Harbour family in the "steamboat" style, which includes wrap around porches surrounding both the upper and lower levels of the home.
Found on the first floor are rooms and furniture completely replicating what it would have been like to live in a home during this era. The Victorian home features an antique toy room and a women's room, complete with antiquities and interesting objects.
During the summer months, there are many activities that take place at the Harbour House Museum. Guided tours of the home are also available.
Another interesting city to visit in Iron County is the City of Iron River. It houses upper Michigan's largest museum, The Iron County Museum.
The museum has over twenty buildings, including a the Cultural Center, the Research Center, The Lee LeBlanc Wildlife Art Gallery, and the Bernardt Contemporary Art Gallery. There are also plenty of other activities to enjoy in this city.
Try golfing at the Iron River Country Club. This 9-hole course has a small stream running through it and its shorter layout makes it a fun activity for everyone in your family.
Iron River also provides an arena for various different types of activity. When visiting there, you can enjoy fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, and shopping. You can also take a walk outdoors and simply enjoy the beautiful scenery that Iron County, Michigan, has to offer.
During the winter, there are plenty of things to do, as well. The Great Lakes area has some of the greatest snowmobiling trails in the United States.
Both downhill and cross country skiing are also adventures you can attempt in Iron County. Some of the most beautiful cross country skiing trails are located here, including some that circle lakes and explore the Ottawa National Forest.
Another exciting activity that is pretty unique to the area is dog sledding. This is an activity that those of all ages can participate, even children, and it is a fast-paced and fun adventure.
Your family can also participate in ice fishing together. Rent an ice shanty for a day, and enjoy some quality time fishing with your children.
During the fall, Iron County is home to some of the most beautiful foliage and scenery. When the leaves changes from green to reds, yellows, and oranges, you will be amazing at the spectacular beauty that nature holds for you.
Iron Country, Michigan, is a destination with a great history and feel. The area is quieter and homier than other winter and mountain destinations.
Though it has a small town feel and is a bit more relaxing than other bigger cities that are popular to vacation to, there are still a great deal of recreational and educational activities to be found here. It is definitely a vacation that you will want to remember forever.
