Learning How to Sing With The Speech Level Singing Technique
Learning how to sing can be a truly rewarding and enjoyable experience. I'm fairly sure that most people have once dreamed of being up on stage, thousands of people watching, microphone in hand....
The time it takes to learn how to sing varies, depending on a few critical factors. Firstly, and quite obviously, learning how to sing well depends on your vocal talent. Despite saying this, a person with hardly any talent at all can learn how to sing extremely well, with the correct training.
There are many different techniques and strategies that vocal instructors use on their students. I have been through years of vocal instruction, and encountered some very strange techniques! Things like, unusual body positioning, strange breathing exercises...
...you name it and I've done it! (mostly without any success)
The fact is, learning how to sing is best kept simple. Singing is actually a fairly simple process, and it should be easy. When you are using correct technique, singing is easy. Each note, low or high, is produced with good tone, and no vocal tension.
As I have discovered though, if made to be more complicated than it is, singing can become a big mess. Some of the techniques my previous vocal instructors taught me, caused me to get so uptight and tense, I found myself unable to relax.The vocal chords (which are one of the important muscles involved in the singing process) are very delicate, and don't react well to all this tension! In fact, once you begin to feel tension when you sing, it makes it incredibly hard to improve your voice.
So....
Learning how to sing correctly from the start is very important. This leaves no bad habits to erase......(although with the right training you can erase any bad habits you have developed.....I did) Correct singing requires you to be very relaxed, and allow the vocal chords to adjust themselves without any other muscles interferring (the muscles that cause you all that tension).
This can be done by achieveing a few important things....
breathing correctly
allowing your obtrusive swallowing muscles to relax (Larynx control)
balancing vocal reasonance
Doing these things will allow your vocal chords to be extremely efficient. In this efficient state, you will be able to sing extremely high and low notes, with ease. For high notes, your vocal chords will automatically form a shortened muscle coordination. This is known as "zipping up", or "bridging", and happens when you are supplying optimal air pressure to the vocal chords.
These important aspects of singing are best taught using the speech level singing method. As the name implies, learning how to sing with this method will allow you to sing with the same ease as in speaking. This method consists of simple but highly effective exercises, which automatically control all three points above. The process is systematic, with each exercise building on the last, resulting in a voice with range, volume, vocal freedom, and incredible tone.
In fact, when I first began learning how to sing with the speech level singing technique, my vocal range actually doubled within a few minutes. Talk about an effective exercise!
