With all of the stressors of a long day looming in every crevasse of your mind space

, how do you break through the nervous tension and release the nerve-racking thoughts? How do you leave the day behind, relax and get a restful sleep that will charge your batteries for the next day? It is not easy, but adding some simple techniques to your routine can make a huge difference between tossing and turning all night and peacefully falling into a dream-filled bliss!

Make sure that you have a comfortable mattress. If you are uncomfortable to begin with then it really does not matter what worries are plaguing your brain, you're going to have a rough time feeling relaxed.

Never force yourself to go to sleep. Remember, when you work to force anything it usually goes in the opposite direction. Think about the times when your stressed about needing to get a good night sleep but you're stuck looking at the clock every five minutes, getting tangled in your covers and adjusting the pillow fifty times. Then the minute you stopped trying, that's when you fell asleep. Just rest and allow your body to sleep when it is ready.

Exercise is healthy but stay away from it within the three hours before you are going to bed. Exercise elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow making you more awake and alert rather than sleepy and relaxed.


Yes, just like in "Leave it to Beaver" if the child could not sleep then the Mom would warm some milk for him to drink. Do you know why? Milk is rich in calcium and I-typtophan, which assists your body with preparing for sleep. Besidesit's warm and cozy which is always nice!

Try to condition your body to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day. The only way to do this is by doing lights out and by having the alarming ringing at the same time everyday. I know it is not easy to do this technique, but try as often as possible for maximum sleep heaven!

Cool down your bedroom in the evening. Most people sleep better when it is a little cooler and they can nestle up in their covers or snuggle with their significant other. If it is to warm than neither of the appealing options above are very relaxing at all! In fact, heat increases irritability which can only lead to staying awake and kicking your partner off the bed because you're irritated that they keep putting the pile of covers on you to stay cool! Momma Mia!

Do not work in bed! You want your mind to think of sleep when you hit that mattress, not the report you have due first thing in the morning. Don't confuse your body and your mind to not understand what action you want to associate with your bedSLEEP!

A lot of people like to fall asleep with the TV on but if you do then you are not going to get a full restful sleep. Even when you fall asleep, your mind is still picking up all of the stimulation in the room, including the TV. If you need noise, it is best to fall asleep to one that does not use words for your brain to pick up and comprehend. Better to use nature sounds like the ocean, babbling brook or a light rain. They are relaxing and they do not have a need for interpretation. I have had dreams about selling beauty products and woke up to an infomercial for some beauty line or worse I've had a terrible nightmare and woke up to a horror flick playing on the TV! The ExorcistNot fun at all!

Do something relaxing before you fall asleep. I love aromatherapy and nothing relaxes me more than a nice warm lavender enthused bath by candlelight or just burning incense or a vanilla scented candle before lights out.


Keep a notebook on your nightstand. Sometimes if you just write down your thoughts and drain your head of all of your amazing ideas and the need to analyze a solution for a nagging problem, you'll get it out and sleep better. Just write it down and close the book on it. It can wait until tomorrow.
