Driving scheme generally has two kinds: linear drive and switch driver.
Linear drive applications is one of the most simple and most direct drive applications. In the lighting level white LED application, although there is a low efficiency, adjusting problem of the poor, but because of its simple circuit, small volume, can satisfy some specific application more.
Switch type drive can obtain good control precision and high overall efficiency, used mainly for Buck and boost type two categories. Buck switch is driven in response to the supply voltage higher than the LED terminal voltage or a plurality of LED using parallel driven application cases. Booster type switch is driven in response to the supply voltage is lower than LED voltage or a plurality of LED using tandem drive application cases.

The design of general basic drive LED lighting applications is relatively simple, but if also needs other functions such as a phase control dimmer and power factor correction ( PFC ), the design becomes more complicated. Without power factor correction function of non dimming LED drive usually contains an off-line switching power supply, for constant current regulator output.
LED driver backend architecture consists of a short circuit protection function of the current regulating circuit. Linear regulating circuit can be used to achieve this goal, however this method is inefficient, so the applicability of low output current, not usually applied to the multistage architecture. Alternative method is to use a simple, with current feedback function buck regulator circuit, in order to limit the output current exceeds a desired LED drive current. The offset in total LED forward voltage with temperature and device tolerance changes, further limiting short circuit or other fault conditions at the time of the current, which can protect the driver from damage.
