Let Etiquette Prevail On Your Invitations

When I got married over three years ago, my mother pressed me to learn about all of the details of etiquette

. It was hard to keep track of it all, but because my spouse and I handmade our invitations, the unspoken rules pertaining to those stuck with me the most.

But it seems that many couples are not quite so savvy these days. I often see half a dozen "mistakes" within the first few seconds of opening new invitations. So if you're feeling a little clueless as you are preparing your invitations and RSVP cards, let me give you some insight so you can make a positive impression with all your prospective guests.

Let me begin with my biggest pet peeve: do NOT include the shops at which you are registered on the invitation itself. This is considered very rude, as it seems to say, "By the way, don't forget to pick up a gift before you show up."

My spouse and I included a note on the RSVP cards, but this may not be wise, either, as guests will send them back to you, so they may forget where they should be shopping. Instead, you may want to print it on a separate insert or on the "Save the Date" card. Even if you don't have a registry or don't want gifts, don't include this information on the invitation.

If you have many guests coming in from out of town, then you should include information about accommodations and other tourist details with the Save the Date card so that attendees can adequately prepare. Invitations should include maps and/or directions to the ceremony and reception site(s).

The requirements for addressing outer and inner envelopes are slightly different, so if you plan to use both (which is becoming increasingly uncommon), check some wedding websites to learn about the nuances. For example, if you are allowing guests to bring dates, then the "and Guest" portion belongs on the inside envelope and should be excluded from the outside.

Make sure that you order plenty of extra invitations. Even if you know in advance which friends or family members won't be able to attend, it is still polite to send them an invitation. Plus, you may want a few to spare for scrapbooks or framing in the future.

This might seem silly, but a friend of mine was in Brazil when I was preparing to marry, but she still wanted one of the invitations so she could feel included.

Above all, let courtesy prevail. You can be original and have fun, but you still want to focus on being polite.
