Does the idea just go away or does it wait for a better time to reveal itself? It could sit dormant for a long time and in fact never shows itself until the employee isn't any longer at the same place. People hold onto ideas and eventually somebody will be able to take advantage of it. Why shouldn't your company benefit from all the ideas and thoughts of your employees?
So how do you get the employees to tell you what they think? You don't want every employee at any given time to be sharing every thought and zany idea, but you do need a way to filter out the good ideas and give credit to the people that came up with them. The employee needs to be recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty, because while they may be helping themselves, they are really helping the company even more.
You want them to feel that if they help the company then they are helping themselves and in order to do that they need to feel as though they will be rewarded for the effort. Recognition is always a good way to reward hard work, but monetary gain is the ultimate reward for anybody. After all, why are you working if you are not expecting to be paid accordingly? This is ultimately a decision that needs to be made on a company by company effort.
But before any of that can even be thought about, you have to have some way to get the ideas from the workers heard. Suggestion boxes have been around for a long time, but most people feel as if those never even get read and never are taken seriously. Also because they are anonymous, they tend to be places where people vent their thoughts.
Being able to vent is good because it gives people a place to put their thoughts into semi-coherent ranting, but they are not always the best for getting true ideas. This is where training comes into play because it is the job of middle management, the people that are in contact with the workers on the factory floor to step in.
They need to be able to identify the good ideas and bring them to the forefront. But that means that they need to be able to identify what is worth bringing forward, but also convey the information forward.
