Letting Other People Drive
If you are married or even dating someone, you can add that person to your auto insurance (as long as you live together)
. Recently, I had the choice to add my boyfriend to my auto insurance. Supposedly, doing so would have saved us both money if we were to add each other to our auto insurance and/or combine our auto insurance. However, I opted not to go through with it. I made the decision not because of whether or not I loved him, but rather, I made the decision based on his past driving record. While my boyfriend is certainly not the world's worst driver, he is most certainly not the best. Having driven with him before, I don't appreciate his hard and fast driving nor his lack of distance that he keeps between himself and other vehicles. The fashion in which he drives would most certainly mean more trips to the mechanic for things such as tire rotation, oil changes and wear and tear to my brakes.
All other things aside, my track record for driving is comparatively cleaner when compared to his. To this day, I have yet to receive a traffic citation, and I haven't been involved in any major vehicular accidents. When you allow someone to drive your car, you are trusting that their driving skills and attention to detail/the law will keep them out of trouble. You hope for this because if they get into trouble by getting a ticket or getting involved in a car accident, this most certainly will mean that your car insurance will probably go up, which will cost you more money out of pocket each month.
A few months ago, I had to have my wisdom teeth removed, which required a ride home from the doctor's office. Because my boyfriend's car is a stick shift (and because he isn't the most gentle driver), I specifically asked if he would drive me home from my appointment using my Jeep (which is an automatic shift). I wanted the ride to be as smooth as possible. While everything went find with the appointment as well as the drive home, had my boyfriend gotten involved in a car accident, I would have been up a creek with my insurance since he was not listed as a driver on my auto insurance. So, choose carefully when it comes to making decisions about who drives your car, because you never know!
