Life Under The Standing Floor Lamp
Some years ago I was sitting on a chair reading the paperback edition of a very good book when I realized it was getting really dark outside
. I inched in closer to my standing floor lamp, turned it on, and read on until I reached the very last page. It took me about eight hours to complete the book but I was able to do it in a single sitting. It is hard to fathom me ever doing that again but all I need is the right book, I guess. Also instead of a physical copy I will be using my e-reader from here on out; it is much more convenient for me.
There was another night in which I was writing a bunch of news and press releases for an event that was happening overseas. Since the event was happening in an entirely different time zone, one in which it was morning over there and night here, I had no choice but to keep my standing floor lamp on throughout most of the night. With the lamp illuminating my room - and a bunch of energy drinks - I was able to get a lot of work done.
Honestly, I do not know what I would do without modern floor lamps. I definitely cannot work in the dark and just as flat out refuse to work around lit candles; that is a fire waiting to happen. Doing stuff or working under the same conditions I just mentioned, I kind of felt like the folks back in the day, when they just started using electricity in their homes or work places. Instead of going to sleep I just kept on working until my tasks were complete. This gives "burning the midnight oil" a whole new meaning to me and I have come to really appreciate what that means. With modern lighting, people can now work whatever time they want and actually complete their jobs much quicker than they used to. Going back to my story about covering that overseas event, without my standing floor lamp I do not think I would have been able to go on working late into the night and early morning. Most likely halfway through the second or third article I would have grown so tired I would have had to lie down and eventually sleep. While this may seem unhealthy to some people, I do not do this often enough to make it an issue. Besides, I always have the weekend to fully rest and relax.
