Lift It And Move It! Slings For Any Application
Whether used in the shipyard or the factory, slings are necessary pieces of equipment when moving large, heavy materials and products
. Not all slings are created equal; in fact, there are different slings for various applications, environments and purposes. This article is intended to introduce five different sling types, including how they work and preferred environments for use.
Web Slings
Found in any manufacturing plant, web slings are essential in moving large, heavy materials within a warehouse. Engineered to withstand tons of weight, web slings are generally composed of high-grade nylon or polyester. Due to the nature of these materials, they are dangerously compromised when exposed to temperatures above 200F. Additionally, other elements such as ultraviolet light and various chemicals, such as bleach, acids and aldehydes can damage nylon and polyester web slings.
Roundslings
With virtually limitless applications, roundslings can support in excess of 100 tons. They can be used in multiple environments, from manufacturing plants to shipyards. Roundslings are light weight, should stretch at only 3% of their capacity and contain materials that provide protection from ultraviolet light. These slings are designed with an inner core of fibers that bare the loads weight as well as an outer sheath of materials that protect and maintain the interior fibers. Roundslings are more rugged than web slings, and are more effective in outdoor working environments.
Wire Rope Slings
Popular within the construction industry, wire rope slings are inexpensive and resist damage from rough worksite conditions. Designed with multiple steel wires comprising diameters of 1 and larger, these slings come in various styles that adapt to diverse needs. The most popular wire rope slings include 6x37 in diameters larger than 1 inch and 6x19 at smaller diameters. These numbers reference the quantity of steel wires contained in each rope.
Chain Slings
For the most rugged conditions, chain slings combine the strength of steel with the versatility of multiple end fittings for numerous applications. Simply stated, chain slings are the strongest slings on the market. They are available in two different grades, including Grade 80 and Grade 100. Although Grade 80 is the industry standard, Grade 100 slings are 25% stronger per chain diameter. Chain slings are the ideal component for foundries and steel mills as they can withstand high temperatures, chemicals and ultraviolet light.
Mesh Slings
When working environments are not conducive to synthetic slings such as web slings and roundslings, wire mesh slings can bare similar weight, but withstand harsh temperatures, chemicals and ultraviolet light. They are composed of high tensile steel wire that is spiraled and joined with straight pins and brazing. Wire mesh slings can only be used in limited applications, but work well in steel warehouses and machine shops.
Whether a sling is being used to lift a small piece of steel or a large piece of machinery, there are various types of slings that can meet the needs of numerous applications. One of the most important factors to consider aside from load capacity includes environmental considerations. Be sure to understand the elements that can harm a particular sling so that all potential accidents can be avoided. Additionally, always consult a professional sling manufacturer that can offer guidance and suggestions for deciding on a specific product.
