A good place to start with would be your budget. If you have saved up for redecorating, then you'll still have to budget for this and that, but if you really have limited funds, think carefully on how you're going to spend your money.

Here are some suggestions:

A fresh coat of paint on the walls might make the world's difference and would for sure be cheaper than wall paper. Consider the color of your furnishings and be lead by that. Visit your hardware store where they have very handy color coordinating cards. If you've always gone for a safe color such as white or cream, get advice on what other colors you could use with great effect.

Buy a new lamp with an interesting lampshade as a focus point. Even if your walls remain the same color, you could really brighten up the room with a special lamp that will glow in the dark and become your pride and joy.

The stores are full of overthrows for your tired or faded furniture. You can brighten then up and give them another few years by covering them with bright or more sedate colored overthrows. Be bold and daring by choosing a bright color. It might even compliment your new lamp and together they could be all you need to improve the look of your lounge.

Think about adding some character and color by putting down a loose rug. They come in all shapes and sizes and textures. The very popular shag pile rugs of the 60's and 70's are a very popular choice too. So you see, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to refresh your place, just be a little creative.
