Linksys WRT54G is G technology Broadband router which works with Cable or DSL Internet service

. It has 4 Ethernet ports where you can connect 4 computers with the cable. If you want to connect more than 4 computers in the network with the Ethernet cable then you can use a switch to increase the number of ports. You can also use up to 32 wireless computers with linksys WRT54G.

This is one of the most used routers. It works on G technology and you will get maximum wireless speed of 54 Mbps. The maximum wired speed will be 100 Mbps.

How to setup Linksys router?

If you have the CD that comes with the Linksys WRT54G then you can use the CD to setup the router. Before settings up the router, connect your main computer directly to the modem and make sure that your computer will be able to access the Internet without the router. If it is on line with the modem then your modem is in working condition. Now connect your main computer and the Internet modem to the router. For the initial set up of the router, it is recommended that your computer should be connected to the router. Even if it is a wireless laptop, connect it to the router with the cable for the set up. Now run the CD and follow the setup instructions. At the end you will be able to setup the router.

How to setup the Linksys WRT54G without CD or any software?

If you are not able to setup the Linksys WRT54G without CD then you can do it manually also. For this you will need to access the setup page of the Linksys WRT54G. On this page you will find all the settings. According to your Internet service provider you can change the settings of the router. Connect your main computer to one of the Ethernet port of the router and your modem to the Internet port. Open the setup page and change the settings of the router.

Using WRT54G router, the maximum wireless speed will be 54 Mbps. Before connecting to the wireless network on your laptop or any other wireless device, make sure that you have settings of the network. You need to know the name of the network ( SSID ) and the wireless security key or password. Once you have all the settings then you can try to connect to the network. The steps to connect to the wireless network will be different for different operating systems.

Firmware upgrade for Linksys WRT54G:

Firmware is the software of the router. Linksys WRT54G version 5 and 6 need firmware upgrade. If you have trouble connecting to the wireless network or slow speed then upgrade the firmware of the router.

You will need to first download the latest firmware from the Linksys website. Connect your computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Open the setup page of the router and upgrade the firmware. Never upgrade the firmware with the wireless computer. The firmware file for Linksys WRT54G version 1 to 4 is same. For Linksys WRT54G version 5 and 6 the firmware file is same.

Linksys WRT54G version 1 to 7 is the routers with 3 years of hardware warranty period and 3 years of free technical support. Version 8 has hardware warranty of 1 year with free technical support. Most of the Linksys WRT54G routers are now out of warranty and no free technical support for Out of warranty.
