Lip Balm - A Promotional Revolution? Really?
Lip balm, also called a lip salve, is a type of makeup applied topically to a person's lips to relieve cold sores and angular stomatitis or cheilitis
. Aside from its medical purposes, lip balms can be used on a regular basis to remedy dry and chapped lips, as well as for aesthetic purposes. While lip gloss and lipsticks are used mainly by women for its cosmetic properties, the use of lip balms can be considered as practical and hygienic, and can be used by men as well.
Lip balm formulas often contain petroleum jelly, scented oils, camphor, menthol, beeswax, as well as other minor ingredients. Lip balms created for special purposes also have vitamins, salicylic acid and aspirin, as well as avobenzone, octinoxate and other ingredients found in sunscreens to protect the lips from sun damage.
When lip balm is applied to the lips, it creates a protect layer on the surface to seal in the lip's moisture and protect it from dirt and other external exposure. Dry lips result from overexposure to the elements like wind, cold temperatures and dry air, which drain the moisture not only from the lips, but the whole body.
The lips are susceptible to the environment and tend to dry the quickest as the skin on this part of the body is thinner than the skin on the arms or legs. Petroleum jelly and different waxes added to the formula seal the moisture in to prevent in from seeping out. Vitamins, salicylic acids and sunscreens help revitalize the skin on the lips by making it healthier, exfoliating dead cells and protecting it from overexposure to sunlight. Many lip balms have different colours and flavours, which also give it cosmetic and aesthetic appeal.
The first lip balms came in small, handy containers where one dips a finger into the mixture and applies it on the lips. Now, more manufacturers prefer stick-type lip balms, which are similar to lip glosses and lipsticks. This type is more convenient as one only needs to open the cap and apply the lip balm directly to the lips.
The earliest lip balms manufactured were made from earwax. This trend did not last long because though the balm served its purpose, the taste was somewhat peculiar. The first natural lip balms appeared in the 1960's when it was manufactured as medication for chapped lips and sold locally. This time, the main ingredient was beeswax, along with moisturizers like butter and oil. Jojoba Oil and Cocoa butter were often used in manufacturing the earliest natural lip balms. In the 1990's, cocoa butter was replaced by shea butter, as the latter provided more moisture and also revitalized dry lips.
With more and more chemical ingredients added into modern lip balms, some groups have raised concerns whether lip balms have addictive and promote dependency. This claim, however, has never been proven as all ingredients used in making lip balms are FDA-approved.
