Most people report that they are able to return to normal activity within two weeks. Soreness may also follow the surgery for up to two weeks, and can be treated with either over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. It's important to remember that liposuction is a surgical procedure, and to plan adequate time for rest and recovery.

Some other side effects may include bruising, numbness, scarring and swelling. Bruising is very common among liposuction patients, and may last from two days to two months. Numbness may also last for several weeks.

The severity of scarring will differ according to the procedure done, but should fade over the weeks. Scarring will vary from patient to patient because of its dependence on other factors, such as genetic make-up. Discuss with your physician any concerns you might have about scarring and how to minimize negative results.

Because liposuction is an invasive cosmetic surgery, at least some swelling following the procedure is to be expected. Swelling occurs because of damage done to the lymphatic tissues, and they take time to restore themselves. It is normal to see swelling in the area treated, along with swelling in the ankles. Along with swelling, the treated area may appear lumpy. Skin around the area may also seem somewhat loose. After six months, however, the area should appear more natural and the desired results should be visible.

After a liposuction procedure, the suctioned fat cells permanently gone. The final result, however, can only be maintained with proper exercise and a healthy diet. A healthy figure requires a healthy lifestyle, and constant attention. If the patient does gain weight following surgery, the fat cells neighboring those removed can still enlarge, and may cause distortions.

As with any surgery, be sure to discuss recovery time and side effects with your surgeon before undergoing a liposuction procedure. If you feel your side effects are abnormal, make sure to discuss them with your physician in your follow-up appointments.
